An unheated Ceylon padparadscha sapphire. Weight: 1.08 ct. Variety: Padparadscha (sapphire) Dimensions: 6.26 x 4.30 x 3.74 mm Treatment: None It's a pad with an orange base and pink admixture. The tone is medium and the stone is eye clean (photos were taken using a macro lens so the feather shows). It has a window and the cut could be better overall, but that's factored into the price. It goes for $500 plus shipping.

An unheated 3.05 ct. ruby. It comes with a full format lab report, and additionally a smaller brief type report from a second laboratory. COLOUR: Pure red. The images may show a bit of orange on some monitors but the actual stone is vividly red with no secondary hues. Red-red. CLARITY: The stone is exceptionally clean for a ruby - it doesn't have any visible feathers or crystals anywhere at all, in any direction or orientation. It does however have some silk, which can make it look a bit sleepy indoors. Outdoors and in bright light, it shines velvety red. CUTTING: Round mixed cut. Very high crown and imperfect cutting so a recut may be necessary. The cut is definitely not a forte here, as shown in the images. It would look a lot better than it does right now if it was treated to a recut. MEASUREMENTS: 7.84 x 7.89 x 5.36mm. TREATMENTS: None. ORIGIN: Mozambique

A Ceylon yellow sapphire of 10.21 carats. The stone is unheated and well cut. It's tone is medium-light and it's completely loupe clean and full of sparkle. Comes with a lab report stating no heat.

A mellow cornflower blue sapphire of 10.47 carats with a Lotus Gold report from Richard W. Hughes stating the stone is unheated and untreated, of Ceylon origin and has a pleasant cornflower blue color with rich saturation. It also has a GRS report from before it was recut for brilliance and color improvement. Good spread, not deep or shallow, no window. Looks like a good ten carats face up and it's completely eye clean even close up. A report and a few images included below.

An untreated Ceylon blue sapphire of 11.02 ct. The stone is richly saturated, eye clean and nicely cut with a good spread so it looks more like 14-15 carats face up - but without a large window which would normally be the result of this large a spread. Its colour falls into the general cornflower range and some labs might give it a cornflower report, but we wouldn't advertise it as such because its tone occasionally looks too light for it. Brilliance is good and the stone has no eye-visible inclusions. Dimensions are 14.39 x 12.69 x 7.52 mm.

An unheated blue sapphire. Weight: 4.60 ct. Dimensions: 10.23 x 8.55 x 5.88 mm Color: Blue Cut: Oval, modified brilliant crown and step pavilion Clarity: Eye clean Treatments: None The stone is eye clean and nearly loupe clean too - just 1 tiny crystal is visible under the loupe. Its brilliance is pretty great, and it lights up very well. Cutting is also pretty good. There's a small window but the color overwhelms it pretty easily. The color would best be described a well saturated medium blue in daylight, but it looks slightly lighter under grading lights. In daylight it's a very pleasant, glowing, vibrant blue that's typical of nicer Ceylon sapphires. Price: $6,500 for the stone.

The two untreated stones below were bought in rough from a mine and cut recently. 1) Blue Sapphire Weight: 1.15 ct. Dimensions: 6.13 - 6.22 x 4.04 mm Shape: Trillion Color: Medium blue Treatments: None Clarity: Eye clean 2) Pink sapphire Weight: 1.21 ct. Dimensions: 7.50 x 5.55 x 3.52 mm Shape: Oval Color: Light pink with a slight orange touch Treatments: None Clarity: Eye clean Both have reports stating no heat. The cutting on the blue is great. It's very sharp and exceptionally brilliant for a trillion. $700 for both stones. Would accept close offers.

A parcel of beautiful bright red spinels. The stones range from 4mm to 5mm and weigh 41.34 carats. Most are 5mm, followed by 4.5mm and only then 4. Some are orangish red, some pinkish red, some red-red but all are bright and lively and light up even indoors. Lots of life since the crowns are brilliant cut while the pavilions are Portuguese. Perfect for jewellery, earrings, sets, etc. High impact color in spinel, and pretty popular too. Clearance price of $65/carat.

Weight: 2.46 ct. Dimensions: 8.66 x 6.94 x 5.08 mm Cut: Oval Color: Royal blue Treatment: Standard heat Clarity: Eye clean Report: Yes The stone has nice brilliance and very good lustre since it was recut/repolished from 2.58 ct. It's eye clean and vivid royal blue. The small amount of color zoning in it is only visible in certain orientations but we tried showing it in the photos as a "worst case" scenario. Keep in mind this is a macro lens and everything is zoomed in. This zoning will likely disappear completely if the stone is set, and already isn't visible if it's checked under a grading lamp close up, or if the stone is lit up fully in daylight. It's a nice, vivid blue.

A pair of nice looking white sapphires. Pear shapes, standard heat only. Both stones are eye clean. Brilliance is really good as well. Really nothing much to say about either stone - they're nice, bright white sapphires. Details: 1) Weight: 1.00 ct., Dimensions: 7.54 x 5.29 x 3.40 mm 2) Weight: 1.08 ct., Dimensions: 7.60 x 5.17 x 3.57 mm $310 total.

An unheated 1.50 ct. blue sapphire. Excellent royal blue for a no heat sapphire, but it has to be said that the cutting is pretty bad. It has a high crown and a deep pavilion and generally looks like 1 ct. face up. It's eye clean and could be recut to look better. Measures 6.46 x 5.84 x 4.88mm and weighs 1.50 ct.

Color: Cornflower blue Shape: Square cushion Cut: Modified brilliant crown and step cut pavilion Treatments: None, unheated A really nice cornflower blue sapphire - fully within that desirable color grade and it would likely get a report stating the same anywhere on the globe. As usual with stones from this locality, the cutting is "a bit bottom heavy" to put it mildly. It pavilion is quite deep so it faces up as 6 carats or so. It's a very rare, nice looking unheated cornflower blue.

A really nice and pretty large blue sapphire. Variety: Blue sapphire Weight: 25.98 ct. Color: Cornflower blue Shape & cut: Cushion, standard mixed/step cut Dimensions: 18.14 x 14.50 x 11.87 mm Clarity: VVS Treatments: None Certificate: GRS The stone is exceptionally clean for a large blue sapphire. It does have a feather and a few tiny crystals, but none are usually visible to the unaided eye in daylight. To be safe though, it should be called VVS even though it does look eye clean most of the time. Its color is a nice cornflower blue. There's a tiny bit of greenish blue in one orientation, but it really doesn't detract from the overall blue impression since it isn't that visible by itself and the rest of the strong blue hue overwhelms it. A bright unheated blue sapphire. Variety: Blue sapphire Weight: 5.99 ct. There's just enough silk to disperse the light and make it glow, but not enough to take away from its brilliance or make it look dull. The stone is eye clean and well cut apart from having a deep pavilion; it faces up as about 1.20 so there's some 30 points of added weight in the pavilion. This won't be a problem with setting though. It has an unheated report, but when we bought it it was actually disclosed to be blowpipe heated (traditional low heat). ***DETAILS*** Two really nice hessonite garnets. Very clean for hessonite, no treacle effect when seen with the unaided eye and both are free of the blackish extinction which garnets often show. A part of its bluish tint stayed after cutting and the stone now looks more like a grossular 'mint' type garnet than anything else - with the added benefit of chrysoberyl hardness and toughness. The blue tint persists even in incandescent light. It has a bit of extinction near the middle since the cut was purposely elongated to try to keep as much weight as possible, but it's not as apparent to the eye as it is to the camera (it looks gentler to the eye, while the camera sees it as a sharp cutoff, especially in the daylight images). Incredibly bright and lively, and with a very, very rare teal-blue color to boot. A far cry from more common teal sapphires, it is much brighter and more brilliant than usual and only made all the rarer by the fact that it hasn’t been heated. Looks pleasantly cold and crystalline in just about any light, and will look pleasant and bright regardless of time of day or season anywhere on the planet. The tiny tilt window visible in the images isn’t visible at all when the stone is checked in hand, and will certainly not be visible once it’s set (it really is absolutely tiny). Finding a good candidate stone for that was never going to be easy, since blues of this type get very, very pricey as weight rises and our chosen barion style really doesn’t spare the material at all – it lowers the final yield very substantially. There's simply no way around it – sharply angled straight lines going directly from the girdle to the culet cost a lot of weight compared to the more commonly used gradually angled step facets. So when we came across an elongated royal blue oval of 1.85 carats that had some issues lighting up due to its deep pavilion, we knew that this was as close to the perfect chance as we were going to get. Our target yield was just over a carat, and the finished stone luckily turned out a good bit over that. Its brilliance was improved immensely – it now looks sharp and clean and polished. Light return was likewise greatly improved, so now it has no extinction issues. Traditional cuts are often optimized for maximum color, rather than accuracy – so it wasn’t too much of a surprise when cutting away nearly a third of the initial weight resulted in a lighter tone. The stone is now vivid blue rather than royal blue, but it still has more than enough color left to be considered a very high quality blue sapphire (and what's more, now also has a cut that matches its quality). The single tiny crystal near the girdle needs light to fall at exactly the right angle to become visible when it’s being viewed up close, so the stone does actually look eye clean 99% of the time – but just for that 1% we called it “eye clean to VVS” in the grading above.
