Dream ring alert! This Marquise antique later 18th century Georgian ring (1780s) features black dot paste in non round shapes, with colored foil behind the stones and a closed back, very typical of the period. Some of the color still remains on the foil, resulting in a kaleidoscope of colors that is really spectacular. Silver on the top, with a gold band that tests for between 12 and 14 k. The band is engraved with a pattern that has faded on the sides but still present on the lower sides and back of band. Head size measures 2.1 cm by 2.9 cm. The hoop (band) is original, pastes retaining some of the color from the foils (non darkened), all present and original, with 2 pastes slightly chipped. Only present under a loupe. All other pastes under a loupe show normal slight abrasions consistent with age. Size 5.5.
I can't stress enough how unique this ring is! Such a great example of high quality paste in the 1700s... Higher crown, non round shapes pushed very close together, etc. with the marvelous foiling. It's a technique that was quite different in the 1700s than even the 1800s paste. The back band has a tiny area of slight discoloration where it is darker - probably from a gold test at some point. This won't come around again. Let me know if you have any questions! Guaranteed a true Georgian antique.
