For sale is an extremely rare Antique Portuguese Georgian foiled Chrysoberyl flower ring, from circa 1760. The greenish-yellow chrysoberyl stones are foiled, and came from Portuguese mines in Brazil. Fabulous jewelry was made from the various gemstones exported from these mines until the French invasion of Portugal in 1809. Most of these pieces were owned by royalty and donated to convents, which is why it's rare to see a piece pop up for sale.
The piece is fashioned in the style of a flower, with the center Chrysoberyl more of a yellow hue, and the petals more greenish. The center cut down collet setting is 18k gold, while the rest of the face is set in silver, which has oxidized over time. It appears the head was originally a button, and during the Victorian period a ring shank was expertly added. The ring shank is 9k gold (hallmarked 375) and also hallmarked for 1897. I believe it could be resized by an expert jeweler, but you would need to be careful of the hallmarks, which are toward the side. Ring size is 9.5 US.
Condition: The chrysoberyls under a loupe have abrasions, like you might expect for a ring of this age. A small nick on of them, but mostly can't be seen except under a loupe. Nice condition of the foiling and the rest of the ring. Really a beautiful collectors piece, as these are getting harder and harder to find! It's also a nice size, not too big or too small. The flower head is 16mm in diameter, and the gold shank is a little thicker than your average band with nice detailing on the sides. *Note the antique box is not included in the sale.
