Blue Zircon Diamond Cocktail Ring 14k
Beautiful vintage large solitaire zircon ring flanked by four accent diamonds, set in yellow and white gold, currently sized at 6.25 (and able to be resized), weighing 6.76g. The centerpiece is a striking 10.4mm x 10.66mm blue-green zircon with vibrant intensity and a commanding size, equivalent to a 4-5 carat diamond, making this ring a true statement piece. Zircon, a natural gemstone, is often mistaken for the synthetic cubic zirconia due to the similarity in names. This confusion has impacted zircon’s reputation to the point where some gemologists have proposed renaming it "Cambolite," reflecting its origin in Cambodia and distinguishing it from synthetic stones.
One of December's birthstones, zircon has been used in jewelry for thousands of years, reaching particular popularity in the Edwardian, Art Deco, and Retro periods. This cocktail ring captures that historical design shift, with a style dating from the late Art Deco to early Retro period (circa 1929-1935). Its 14k yellow gold with soft curves replaces the symmetrical, geometric aesthetics of the Deco era that preceded it. During this period, yellow gold made a strong comeback after years of preference for white metals like platinum and white gold. The central Old European Cut zircon with its open culet beautifully embodies this early transition to Retro design.
Though Zircon is a softer gemstone, this piece remains in very good condition with only very slight wear, indicating it was lightly and carefully worn. With zircon’s high dispersion, the ring promises exceptional sparkle and a pop of rich color, a welcome addition to any collection.
