Today we are pleased to offer the most charming Victorian Era swallow bird brooch pave-set with sparkling antique Rose cut diamonds in a setting of silver-topped 18k yellow gold. A single red ruby serves as the swallow's eye. A favorite form in Victorian sentimental jewelry, the swallow symbolizes both the home and steadfast love. In the natural world, swallows are noted for their commitment to monogamy. When bonded, a pair of swallows are mates for life. In European lore, they are also said to help lead wayward sailors to the safety of home because they are often the first birds seen when approaching land. This is a larger scale brooch measuring roughly 1 3/4 of an inch long and wide tip to tip. There are 5 small stamps indicating that the brooch is French and 18k gold topped in silver.
Rose cut diamonds appear larger than modern cut diamonds because they are flat on one side, they are usually at least half the carat weight of a modern cut diamond of the same diameter. Exact diamond weight is unable to be determined without removing them from the setting but we conservatively estimate .75 ctw of diamonds in this brooch. It could be worn in a number of ways, in addition to pinning on fabric as traditionally worn, it could also be connected to a necklace as shown, or used with various converters as a pendant or in the hair. This is a beautiful piece of antique jewelry that is sure to delight its next owner.
