Chrome Sphene is the variety of Sphene that is colored by chromium. The best has an intense green color with no yellow modifier. Its Madagascar counterpart has more of a Peridot color & is much more common. This stone hails from Afghanistan which produces some of the finest Chrome Sphene in the world.
This fine specimen has the color very similar of Chrome Diopside & absolutely no yellow modifier at all. Quite a few Chrome Sphene’s have a dingy brownish green color. Not this stone & holds its color in all lights. The tone is dark (as with many Chrome Sphenes) but is much closer to medium dark than very dark. Call it a light dark tone. This is not a blackish stone. Its dispersion is incredible, especially showing a great red dispersion flashes, along with yellow, orange & green flash. This is demonstrated well in the video under LED, but incandescent & especial sunlight love this stone. It even shows dispersion in CFL light! Looks great in low to medium light as long as it is directly hitting it. The cutting & polish is genuinely nice helping the dispersion along.
Sphene is a fairly soft stone 5 – 5 ½ hardness on the mohs scale, same as Apatite. People have set it in rings, but pendants & earrings are more suitable.
This is a true collector’s stone for those who can appreciate it. I have to say I tempted to keep it myself & if it does not sale in a timely fashion I fear the temptation to keep it will overwhelm me.
