Video is the best reprentation of stone:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QBwxSy4NM8c
Note - the video dos not come close to showing the dispersion of this Sphalerite. To really appreciate the disperson & brilliance. The stone must be seen in person.
With a refractive indice almost that of Diamond – 2.37. A dispersion three times of Diamond – 1.56. Gem quality Sphalerite has few equals in the gemstone world for a kaleidoscope of swirling dispersion of colors & sheer brilliance. It also can be quite vivid in color.
This stone is a top example of the species. It is eye clean; most Sphalerite is included to the eye. Very rare to have such a large stone eye clean as this one. It has a bright medium light tone yellow (strong saturation) & world class cutting that allows the dispersion to talk, & the stone does talk loudly.
It comes from the Aliva mine, Santander, Spain, which has been closed since 1989, & has the reputation for producing the finest Spalerite in the world. Gem quality specimens are becoming more & more rare, as very little is on the market.
A true collector’s gem, Sphalerite is by far best suited just to look at & admire. A soft stone 3/12 - 4 hardness on the mohs scale & sensitive to heat, Sphalerite is not suited for jewelry, though some have set it in pendants & earrings, I do not advise it. If you do, make sure you really have someone that has years of experience setting.
There really is not much more I can say about this exceptional specimen of the species., other than the video does not come close to doing this stone justice, both color wise & dispersion wise, but it gives you an idea. Bling!
